Aberdeen Developers are pleased to present a talk by Matt Lacey on Thursday 23rd Feburary 2012 at the Robert Gordon University.
Getting started with Windows Phone
Developers make more money with Windows Phone apps than with iPhone ones....an increasing number of companies claim. It's an exciting opportunity and previous experience with Microsoft's tools and technologies can provide a head start when you want to begin learning how to create apps. This session will not only help you discover how to get started building apps for the fastest growing mobile marketplace but also provide advice on making your apps stand out. We'll cover all the essentials for the phone and also include a few tips that will help when you start building metro style apps for Windows 8 too.
Speaker Bio
Matt Lacey is disappointed with most of the software experiences he's exposed to each day and dreams of a world where software works the way users want and need it to. He believes that things can be better and wants to help developers make things better. You'll often find him answering questions on StackOverflow and organising 2, yes 2, user groups: DevEvening and the Windows Phone User Group. Since the late 90's he's worked at a variety of companies (from the very large to the very small) and built software on more platforms and with more languages than he can remember. He currently works as a freelance mobile software developer specialising in Windows Phone. Read his development ramblings on his blog and follow him on twitter (@mrlacey).

With the help of some fellow minded User Group leaders across Scotland, we have established the “Scottish Meetup Network”.
At present, this network does not have any web presence (and we are not sure whether it ever will), instead it exists solely as a Google Group. It is a place where UG Leaders in Scotland can post questions, share information, and organise combined events and speakers.
One of the benefits of this type of group is clarity about what events are coming up, and thanks to the guys at techmeetup, we are now sharing their “Open Tech Calendar” which they run. This means that I will be posting all the ADNUGUK meetings to this calendar, and vice versa, you will be able to see other events that are coming up in Scotland.
I have created a page on this site here, that reproduces the Open Tech Calendar for ease of remembering where it is.

Aberdeen Developers are pleased to present a talk by Craig Murphy on Wednesday 14th December 2011 at the Robert Gordon University.
The Importance of Requirements
-- having some idea of what you're doing
Whatever your business, if it involves the construction of anything, it's best to have some sort of idea of what you're building. You don't see house builders working without drawings; they'll beaver away for a couple of months building a house. In the software business, it's not uncommon for us to spend many months or years working on the same piece of software, often with little clear business or user direction.
Over the course of 60 minutes, I will tell a war story that has consumed two years of my life, so far. In the absence of a clear set of requirements, he worked on a project without a specification. It grew arms and legs, there was scrap and rework, project managers came and went. I won't advocate any particular solutions (e.g. agile, waterfall, Scrum, etc.) but I will present "what worked for me" and will be happy to hear what works for you!
