Aberdeen Developers are pleased to present a talk by David Muir on Thursday 22nd March 2012 at the Robert Gordon University.
A Step into Workflow Foundation 4
As software developers, we are currently on the lookout for tools and frameworks which we can utilise in order to improve our efficiency and productivity. It is important to understand what these are, what they can do, why they are useful and most important when we should use them.
This session aims to provide introduction by example to Workflow Foundation 4. We will look at what Workflow Foundation is, what it can do and why we should use it. We will then look into some examples with emphasis on:
- Workflow Authoring Models
- Working with Data
- Custom Activities
- Workflow Services
As a conclusion to the session we will then look at when we should use Workflow Foundation.

Aberdeen Developers are pleased to present a talk by Matt Lacey on Thursday 23rd Feburary 2012 at the Robert Gordon University.
Getting started with Windows Phone
Developers make more money with Windows Phone apps than with iPhone ones....an increasing number of companies claim. It's an exciting opportunity and previous experience with Microsoft's tools and technologies can provide a head start when you want to begin learning how to create apps. This session will not only help you discover how to get started building apps for the fastest growing mobile marketplace but also provide advice on making your apps stand out. We'll cover all the essentials for the phone and also include a few tips that will help when you start building metro style apps for Windows 8 too.
Speaker Bio
Matt Lacey is disappointed with most of the software experiences he's exposed to each day and dreams of a world where software works the way users want and need it to. He believes that things can be better and wants to help developers make things better. You'll often find him answering questions on StackOverflow and organising 2, yes 2, user groups: DevEvening and the Windows Phone User Group. Since the late 90's he's worked at a variety of companies (from the very large to the very small) and built software on more platforms and with more languages than he can remember. He currently works as a freelance mobile software developer specialising in Windows Phone. Read his development ramblings on his blog and follow him on twitter (@mrlacey).

HTTP Caching 101
Caching is one of the most powerful feature of HTTP and ReSTful architecture, and also one of the most misunderstood. This session will review what can be done with HTTP, debunk a few myths and show some commonly-implemented patterns you can implement in your own clients.

With the help of some fellow minded User Group leaders across Scotland, we have established the “Scottish Meetup Network”.
At present, this network does not have any web presence (and we are not sure whether it ever will), instead it exists solely as a Google Group. It is a place where UG Leaders in Scotland can post questions, share information, and organise combined events and speakers.
One of the benefits of this type of group is clarity about what events are coming up, and thanks to the guys at techmeetup, we are now sharing their “Open Tech Calendar” which they run. This means that I will be posting all the ADNUGUK meetings to this calendar, and vice versa, you will be able to see other events that are coming up in Scotland.
I have created a page on this site here, that reproduces the Open Tech Calendar for ease of remembering where it is.

Aberdeen Developers are pleased to present a talk by Craig Murphy on Wednesday 14th December 2011 at the Robert Gordon University.
The Importance of Requirements
-- having some idea of what you're doing
Whatever your business, if it involves the construction of anything, it's best to have some sort of idea of what you're building. You don't see house builders working without drawings; they'll beaver away for a couple of months building a house. In the software business, it's not uncommon for us to spend many months or years working on the same piece of software, often with little clear business or user direction.
Over the course of 60 minutes, I will tell a war story that has consumed two years of my life, so far. In the absence of a clear set of requirements, he worked on a project without a specification. It grew arms and legs, there was scrap and rework, project managers came and went. I won't advocate any particular solutions (e.g. agile, waterfall, Scrum, etc.) but I will present "what worked for me" and will be happy to hear what works for you!

Windows Runtime and Metro Apps for Windows 8
At BUILD 2011, Microsoft announced Windows 8. This upcoming version of Windows is probably the biggest change the OS ever went through. Windows 8 focuses on web, apps, touch and the tablet form factor. For developers, things will change as well. They need to be ready to build applications, called Metro applications, tailored for Windows 8 or adapt their existing applications for the new OS. Together with Windows 8, Microsoft announced Windows Runtime (WinRT), a new way of working with Windows.
As you can see, that's a lot of new stuff to get your head around! To help you, Gill Cleeren, Microsoft Regional Director and Silverlight MVP will explain you the new strategy that Microsoft is taking. In this talk, we'll see what WinRT really is, how we can use it to build Metro applications with and how we can leverage C# and Silverlight knowledge to build Metro applications. We'll take a look at a fully working application as well to give you a clear picture of all the knowledge you'll gather during this hour.
By joining this session, the developer story for Windows 8 will have less secrets for you!
Silverlight 5 for LOB Development
Most Silverlight 5 sessions give you an overview of the most magical features in the platform. However, not everyone is busy building 3D-enabled applications or media-intensive applications. Most Silverlight developers build LOB applications. For this group, this session is exactly what you need. Gill takes you on a tour through the Silverlight 5 platform, showing you all the shiny new bits in the LOB department, including improved data binding, MVVM support, implicit styles, PostScript printing and much more. You’ll leave the session with tons of plans to improve your current SL LOB application, that’s a guarantee!

And the announcements for the Aberdeen Developers .Net User Group keep coming!
As I mentioned at our August Meeting I am happy to announce that Mark Rendle of Dot Net Solutions Ltd will be touring Scotland in October, stopping off in Aberdeen on Thursday 13th.
On the night, Mark will actually be doing two presentations:
"Functional Alchemy: Tricks to keep your C# DRY*"
and
"How to manage your manager"
You can find complete details of the talks, and register for it here. To read about Marks own thoughts on the tour check out his blog post here.
As with the booking of the August and September Meetings, I am again using Eventbrite to handle the registration of the October Meeting. In addition, I am going to use Eventbrite and MailChimp to send out the invitations for the Event. In order to achieve this, I have moved the email addresses of all registered Aberdeen Developers .Net User Group members to a contact list within Eventbrite and MailChimp. If for some reason you would like your email address removed from this contact list, then please do not hesitate to get in contact with me.
Hot on the heels of the announcement of our August Meeting, I am pleased to announce our upcoming September Meeting.
This time around we are lucky enough to have Phil Leggetter (@leggetter) presenting a talk on the Real-Time Web. You can find the complete details of the talk, and register for it here.

It seems like ages since the last Aberdeen Developers .Net User Group meeting, but I am happy to say that our next event, scheduled for the 25th August, has now been confirmed.
We are lucky enough to have Jessica Meats of Microsoft doing a talk on SharePoint Online (Office 365) and the differences between it, and a full blown SharePoint server running in your environment.
Now, this time around we are going to try something a little different…
As I have mentioned at the last couple meetings, we are in the process of firming up the details on how we are going to make a move away from the Kentico CMS that we are currently using, in favour of some free services that can be used to organise events.
To that end, in order to register for this months event, you will have to head on over to Eventbrite, rather than the main Aberdeen Developers .Net User Group website. If you don’t have an Eventbrite account don’t worry, you can still register, using simply your first name, last name and email address. However, if you do sign up, which takes less than a minute, you will be able to easily register for future events.
I have just been asked, via email, for some more details about our upcoming event on Silverlight 4, featuring Mike Taulty and Mike Ormond from Microsoft, so I thought I would post some.
The event will be broken up into two sessions, and we will be using two separate rooms to host the event. One room will be where the presentations will be held (A12), and the other, a break out room (A4) for some food and drinks between the presentations.
The evening will roughly consist of the following:
- 5.00pm – Guests start arriving
- 5.30pm – First presentation (Mike Taulty)
- 6.30pm – Break
- 7.00pm – Second presentation (Mike Ormond)
- 8.00pm – Back to the break out room for food and drink, and informal Q and A.
If you have any other questions about the event, then please feel free to drop us a line here:
